Backward Design, Forward Thinking: How Generative AI Enhances Human Creativity

At the OLC Innovate 2026 virtual conference I am the lead presenter of an education session that highlights the creative potential of Generative AI tools and how they can be leveraged in the backward design framework. The session includes recommended prompting techniques and shares how to utilize stream-of-consciousness prompting in AI-enhanced course design.

AI in Action 2026 - AI-Literacy In Assessments: Equipping Students for the Future

In this session, we will review ways to create assessments that integrate AI literacy skill-building. We will review the differences between general AI skills and discipline-specific AI skills, and how they can be integrated into assessments. Attendees will be able to share ideas for AI skills to integrate into assessments with one another on a Padlet board.

Teaching and Learning with AI 2026 - Path 2: An AI-Centric Course Development Framework

Traditional course development processes are too slow. AI-generated courses lack pedagogical rigor. This dichotomy ignores a third option: AI-centric frameworks that maintain quality while dramatically reducing development time. Indiana Wesleyan University's "Path 2" framework leverages custom AI bots, workflow automation, and 'human in the loop' methodology to transform course development. This session demonstrates how structured AI conversations guide developers from learning objectives, through course outlining and alignment, all the way to full course design. Participants experience the process firsthand, drastically reducing course development time while maintaining sound instructional design practices like backwards design principles. Attendees receive a bot template, workflow configurations, and a prompt template for immediate institutional application.
